Service Site: The Cleveland Academy of Leadership Service Site Address: 151 Franklin Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303 Site Supervisor/Title: Andrea Samuel, AmeriCorps Program Director Service Position Type: Reduced Full Time (1200 hours) Term of Service: September 2021 - June 2022 Average Weekly Service Hours: 35 hours Program Overview The Cleveland Academy of Leadership is an elementary school located on the Northside of Spartanburg in Spartanburg County School District 7. AmeriCorps Member Position Overview Members will be assigned to serve in person in a classroom in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade to support the certified classroom teacher. Members will assist with a variety of activities including but not limited to providing small group instruction, supporting social/emotional needs of students, enriching family/school relationships, and monitoring student progress and attendance. Members will serve during regular school hours and will be asked to participate in extra activities throughout the school year such as parent conferences and on-site meetings. Members will also be assisting classroom teachers with remote learning as well as e-learning activities throughout the year. Minimum Qualifications * Be at least 17 years of age or older * Have or be working towards a high school diploma or its equivalent * Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States * Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria pursuant to 45 CFR 2540.202. * Must have a desire to work with elementary age students and help them reach their fullest potential. Essential Functions * Provide service from September to June, Monday - Friday each week with the exception of school holidays. * Members will be expected to serve on Teacher work days to attend Professional Development opportunites. * Attend Member orientation before the beginning of the service year. * Conduct small group instruction with students within the classroom setting * Communicate with parents about upcoming events, student progress, student attendance, classroom behavior, etc. * Attend school wide events * Attend Teacher meetings and Professional Development opportunities * Attend trainings provided by the school and by the AmeriCorps Program Director * Turn in timesheets for the current week each Friday before leaving campus * Evalations will be given by the Program Director, Principal, and Classroom teacher periodically (a minimum of 2 evaluations will happen within the service year.) * Participate in September 11th Day of Remembrance and/or Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service events, which may take place on the weekend or during holidays and include activities outside of the scope of typical day-to-day functions. * AmeriCorps Members will be required to serve in-person at the Cleveland Leadership Academy Campus Additional Responsibilities Although not essential position functions, the Teacher's Assistant Member may be responsible for the following as needed: * Participate in outside service activities approved by the Program's director. Possesses the desire to get the service done with excellence; mentally, is focused on getting the best results for actions taken; does not settle for mediocrity. * Awareness and Sensitivity to the External Environment - Situational awareness; is aware of the organizations that they represent, including the United Way Association of SC, AmeriCorps SC, CNCS, and the Host Site's position in the community and the effect of their words and actions on that position; demonstrates savvy in dealing with agencies, volunteers and donors; is promoting and affirming in conversations about and on behalf of those organizations. * Sedentary Work: Member is required to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met. * Physical Activities: * Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise serving, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. * Communicating: Expressing or exchanging ideas. Activities must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. * Listening: Ability to receive detailed information through appropriate communication. * Visual Acuity: Member is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or expansive reading. * Service Conditions: Member is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Benefits * The living allowance for this position is $1200 distributed on a monthly basis and may not exceed $12,000.00 for the term of service. * This position is eligible for an Education Award up to $4,336.50.
