Job Description Job Description We are seeking an experienced
and detail-oriented Grading & Excavation Estimator to join our
growing team. In this key role, you will prepare accurate,
competitive cost estimates for grading, excavation, earthwork, site
preparation, and related civil construction projects. You will
analyze project plans, perform quantity takeoffs, price
materials/labor/equipment, and develop comprehensive bids to help
secure profitable work while ensuring estimates align with project
scope, site conditions, and company standards. Key Responsibilities
• Review and interpret civil engineering plans, specifications,
blueprints, and bid documents for grading, excavation, earthwork,
site utilities, erosion control, and related scope items. • Perform
detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork volumes (cut/fill),
grading, excavation, hauling, compaction, utilities (storm,
sanitary, water), paving, and other site elements using manual
methods and/or estimating software (e.g., Agtek, Bluebeam,
PlanSwift, or similar). • Calculate costs for labor, equipment
(excavators, dozers, haul trucks, etc.), materials (fill dirt,
aggregates, pipe, etc.), subcontractors, and overhead/profit
margins. • Conduct site visits to assess existing conditions,
access, soil types, topography, potential challenges (e.g., rock,
water, environmental constraints), and production rates. • Solicit
and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes for specialized
trades (e.g., utilities, hauling, erosion control). • Prepare
clear, professional bid proposals, scope breakdowns, and cost
summaries for submission to clients/general contractors. •
Collaborate with project managers, owners, and operations team to
refine estimates, address value engineering opportunities, and
support bid reviews. • Track and analyze historical project costs
to improve future estimating accuracy and maintain a database of
unit prices. • Monitor market trends for material/equipment/fuel
costs and adjust estimates accordingly. • Assist in post-bid
activities, such as negotiations, scope clarifications, and change
order estimating as needed. Required Qualifications • 3–7 years of
experience estimating grading, excavation, earthwork, or heavy
civil/site development projects (experience in
residential/commercial site prep, subdivisions, or public works
preferred). • Strong understanding of earthwork calculations,
swell/shrink factors, production rates, and sitework means &
methods. • Proficiency in reading and interpreting civil plans,
profiles, cross-sections, and specifications. • Experience with
estimating software/tools (e.g., Agtek for earthwork modeling,
Bluebeam for takeoffs, Excel for cost buildup; other programs like
HeavyBid or Bid2Win a plus). • Excellent math, analytical, and
problem-solving skills with high attention to detail. • Ability to
work independently and manage multiple bids/deadlines in a
fast-paced environment. • Strong communication skills for
interacting with clients, subs, suppliers, and internal teams. •
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites
as needed. Preferred Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in
Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or
equivalent field experience). • Knowledge of local regulations,
permitting, and environmental considerations in grading/excavation
work (e.g., stormwater management, erosion control). • Familiarity
with heavy equipment operations and costs. • Experience with bid
management and winning competitive bids in the sitework sector.
