Job Description Job Description JOB TITLE: Surgical Technologist
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Physician and/or Registered Nurse GENERAL
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Surgical technologists, often referred to as
scrubs or operating room technicians, play a vital role in
assisting with surgical procedures under the guidance of surgeons,
registered nurses, and other surgical staff. They are integral
members of the operating room team, which typically includes
surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS: Completion of an accredited
surgical technologist program or a related technical program.
Certification in CPR is mandatory. 1-2 years of relevant clinical
experience. Current BLS certification. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Prepare
and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment for
procedures. Assist in setting up the operating room by arranging
surgical tools, sterile drapes, and solutions prior to surgery.
Adhere to hospital policies and industry standards during patient
pre-operative care. Conduct pre-operative preparations on the
patient's skin and medical equipment. Assemble both sterile and
non-sterile equipment, ensuring proper functionality. Prepare
patients for surgery by cleaning, shaving, and disinfecting
incision sites. Transport patients to the operating room, assist in
positioning them on the table, and cover them with sterile drapes.
Monitor patients’ vital signs, review charts, and assist the
surgical team in donning sterile gowns and gloves. Hand instruments
and sterile supplies to surgeons and their assistants. Hold
retractors, cut sutures, and assist in counting sponges, needles,
and instruments. Aid in preparing and caring for specimens for lab
analysis and assist with dressing applications. Operate
sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and assist with diagnostic
equipment. After surgery, help transfer patients to recovery and
clean and restock the operating room. Perform additional duties as
assigned. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Ability to remain on your feet
for extended periods and assist with lifting or turning patients.
Involves sitting and standing typical of an office environment.
Capacity to focus for up to four hours at a time. Effective verbal
communication skills, both in person and over the phone.
Proficiency in using a computer keyboard and viewing a monitor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Must demonstrate the necessary
knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care to patients.
Understanding of growth and development principles across the
lifespan, with the ability to assess patient data relevant to their
specific age-related needs. Proficient in the nursing process.
Ability to utilize established communication channels effectively.
Capability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with
patients, colleagues, and other healthcare team members.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: The role is typically performed
in a busy office environment with significant telephone
interaction. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
Surgical technologists work in clean, well-lit, and cool settings,
often standing for long durations while remaining alert during
procedures. There may be exposure to communicable diseases and
