Position SummaryThe Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist performs all of the duties of the Cardiovascular Perfusionist that are listed below. In addition, the Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist directly oversees the perfusion department responsible for direct patient care and clinical perfusion services. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist is the primary liaison with the cardiothoracic surgeons on matters relating to perfusion, ECMO, and new services. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist continuously assesses unit needs and ensures adequate resources are available for cases. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist carries out service line initiatives to ensure optimal patient care, efficient operations, quality service, and appropriate utilization of resources. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist establishes goals and strategies to resolve problems and improve service within Perfusion Services and in collaboration with other departments. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist maintains knowledge of evidence-based practices and facilitates the professional development of perfusion staff. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist serves as project lead for initiatives involving the Perfusion Department, including but not limited to implementation of Epic electronic medical record documentation, Enhanced Recovery (ERAS) protocols, and Quality initiatives. The Lead Cardiovascular Perfusionist must collaborate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.The Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist performs those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. The Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist is skilled and qualified by academic and clinical education, who directs and supervises the maintenance, set-up and operation of the heart-lung machine, physiologic monitoring instrumentation, and the related ancillary equipment employed in cardiac surgical procedures under the clinical direction of a Cardiothoracic surgeon. Ability to provide autotransfusion services to promote blood conservation.Minimum RequirementsEducation Baccalaureate degree and a graduate of an accredited perfusion programExperience 5 years' experience as a Cardiovascular PerfusionistCertification Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusionists (ABCP)Core ResponsibilitiesAll of the Cardiovascular Perfusionist responsibilities below as well as:Serve as the lead for the Perfusion Department with regulatory agencies.Serve as the Epic Super User for the department.Ensure assessment and maintenance of Perfusionist competencies.Represent the department on clinical and operational committees.Oversee orientation of new staff members.Identify opportunities for departmental improvement in patient care, operating efficiency, and fiscal control.Responsible for standardization of practice including the development, implementation, and monitoring of perfusion protocols.Remain current with trends and changes in the practice of perfusion.Demonstrate characteristics that promote a healthy team environment.Proactively use problem solving processes to identify, prevent, or resolve clinical or department-related problems.Work with the Director of Perioperative Business Services to effectively manage budget preparation and monitoring.Lead team efforts to control costs of disposable supplies and equipment.Direct and supervise the operation of the heart-lung machine, physiologic monitoring instrumentation, and related equipment during cardiac surgical procedures.Knowledge of blood product conservation methods.Ability to provide autotransfusion services.Ability to operate and/or direct the operation of intra-aortic balloon pumps during and after insertion.Ability to manage equipment, materials, and supplies related to the provision of the service.Expert knowledge of infection prevention techniquesCall responsibilities as assigned.
