Job Description

Under the direction of the CEO, and in accordance with the mission and purpose of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, the District Executive Director is accountable for the administration and coordination of programs for the association; and supervision of assigned Branch Operations, in accordance with the policies and goals of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg.

The incumbent must have the competencies, skills and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the Associations mission, goals and vision for serving the community. Other important competencies of the Group Vice President include the following:

1.Supervises the assigned branch operations. Provides leadership and appraises performance of Branch Executives.

2.Coordinates operations at the branches to be in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Associations policies and procedures.

3.Supervises assigned staff and oversees the operations of the related departments including all program operations. Ensures that all operations meet or exceed minimum quality standards and are in accordance with the provisions of established policies.

4.Ensures that all programs comply with YMCA standards and methods of operations and continually strives to the highest possible level of program quality.

5.Responsible for program development into unserved and underserved portions of the service area.

6.Responsible to create a working climate that encourages staff and volunteers to develop new and creative methods of delivering the mission of the YMCA through progress.

8.Works closely with assigned Association board committees to develop and implement relevant policies that are in accordance with the Association's long-range plan.

9.Assists in the development and implementation of plans for maintenance of and improvements to existing properties, facilities and equipment. Assists management in the planning, development and construction of all new Association facilities.

10.Supports the overall Association by serving as a resource and by participating as a member of various committees and groups including various Program Advisory Teams and all others as assigned. Provides recommendations for improving Association operations.

11.Monitors key results areas and provides effective management by anticipating problems and taking early corrective action.

12.In concert with the CEO, gives leadership to Association long-range strategic planning and monitors performance and stated objectives.

13.Assumes all other responsibilities as deemed necessary or assigned.


1.Four-year college degree in Business Administration or related field required.

2.Must have broad experience in all areas of campaign administration, general not-for-profit administration and knowledge of the YMCAs position in the community.

3.Must be familiar with the YMCAs programs, plans and goals and be able to interpret these in terms of financial goals.

4.Must be able to provide sound administration of the affairs of the branches in respect to purposeful and coordinated programs, good public relations, sound financial and records systems, and good property management.

5.Must be able to develop and maintain good staff relations resulting in a smooth collaborative team of volunteers and staff.

6.Must exercise good judgment and competence in implementing stated needs, objectives and interests in the Y as enunciated by the association management staff and within the latitudes of responsibilities defined by the Board of Directors.

7.Must be able to handle multiple tasks, be able to work heavily with staff and volunteers. Must also be creative and be able to project enthusiasm to board, staff, members, and program participants.

8.Must have skills to interpret and understand the problems and needs of the community and procure the resources needed for the YMCA to appropriately serve.

9.Must be able to interpret the philosophy and corporate relationships of the management of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg.

The incumbent is regularly required to stand and walk for long periods of time, to talk and hear, sit, lift and or move up to 50 pounds, to climb and or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The incumbent is regularly required to work under pressure and or to work rapidly to meet deadlines. More than 50% of time is spent indoors. The noise level is normal to loud within an active YMCA program environment.

Required Certifications

First Aid, CPR, AED, Certified Pool Operator within 3 months of hire.
